His great-great-great-great grandather, Captain Samuel Pottinger, settled in Bardstown in 1776 and was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and the KY militia. He build one of the earliest forts in the area, Pottinger's Station, which was a refuge for Bardstown settlers during the waves of Indian attacks at the end of the 1700's. He also fought with George Rogers Clark in the Ohio Indian Wars. "Pottinger's Creek" was named in his honor by Kentucky Pioneer and Revolutionary Captain James Harrod. A plaque has been erected in the County Courthouse recalling this brave frontiersman's contribution to the settlement of Bardstown.
